Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the club located?
Our home base is Wimbleball Lake on Exmoor: we have evening sessions on the lake for both adults and juniors throughout the summer months. Exmoor and the south west region offer many options for white water paddling, including the Exe, the Dart and the Barle, with lots of flat water paddling close by also. For sea kayaking, we are located close to the beautiful Exmoor and North Devon coast, and are within easy striking distance of the varied paddling available on the south coast.
How do I become a member?
You can obtain information about joining our club through the website’s membership page: https://www.exmoorcanoeclub.org.uk/contact/
If you have any questions about this, please email us on: exmoorcanoeclub@hotmail.co.uk
You are welcome to come along for a taster session, to experience a club session, to help you to decide whether you would like to take out annual membership.
To become a member you will need to complete the membership form on our website and set up a Go Cardless Mandate, so that payment for membership and sessions can be made.
What are the membership fees?
Fees, for the period April 1st 2023 – March 31st 2024, are:
£30 for Adult membership (+ £2 for non British Canoeing members)
And £15 for Junior membership (+ £2 for non British Canoeing members)
Family membership costs £60 (+ £2 each for non British Canoeing members)
This is likely to increase at renewal on 1st April 2025.
How long does my membership last?
Membership runs from April 1st to March 31st.
What happens after I join?
You will receive an email, with useful information about club sessions and policies etc. You will also be added to the ECC email mailing list, with updates about any upcoming trips and club events.
How do I renew my membership?
An email will be sent out to all members, reminding them when they will need to renew. You will need to complete and submit a new membership form each year (but the Go Cardless Mandate remains in place)..
Do I need my own equipment to participate?
We have a range of boats and equipment for members to use for Club activities. Our Club fleet includes sea kayaks, white water boats, open canoes (OC1) and Canadian canoes, which allow members to try out different makes and models of boat across the different paddling disciplines. We also have some Club stand-up paddleboards (SUPs). Spraydecks, paddles, helmets and buoyancy aids are also available for members’ use. In addition to use of Club kit for Club activities, we offer members the option of short-term hire of Club boats and equipment for use outside of Club activities or on peer paddles.
What skill levels are catered for?
We cater for all levels of paddling ability, from complete beginners to very experienced paddlers. In summer we run a programme of coaching and skills development activities that span multiple paddling disciplines and skill levels. In autumn we usually hold a few sessions at a local play wave to help with skills development on moving water. During the winter, we often arrange pool sessions for rolling coaching and practice, along with wider paddle skills development, with sessions for both juniors and adults. So whether you’ve never sat in a boat before, or have many years of paddling experience under your belt, you should find something for you in the Club’s programme of activities.
How does the club ensure safety for its activities?
* We take safety very seriously and seek to foster a safe and enjoyable environment for all members when participating in Club activities. We are affiliated to Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing), the national governing body for paddle sports in the UK, and incorporate much of the Paddle UK guidance on safety into Club activities. We have a Health and Safety Policy which outlines our objectives in respect of health and safety, and details Club Member responsibilities as well as accident and incident procedures. We assess and manage risk associated with Club activities and seek to apply good practice across our portfolio of activities, carrying out reviews of club trips and activities to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement. More information can be found on the ‘Safety’ page of our website.
I see some activities designated as peer paddles, what does this mean?
We differentiate between Club activities and peer paddles. Peer paddles are not Club activities. They have not been organised by – nor have they been risk assessed – by Exmoor Canoe Club, and as such are not covered by our Club insurance. On a peer paddle, there is no coach or designated leader (assumed or otherwise). Everyone takes responsibility for their own safety (and kit) whilst behaving in a responsible way. Paddlers in the group have a duty of care to look out for themselves and each other whilst staying within their own capabilities and limitations.
To participate in a peer paddle you need to:
* Be confident in the water/conditions you are paddling in.
* Be comfortable with the abilities of others in the peer group.
* Do your own risk assessment, based on water levels and conditions, weather and all other relevant factors.
* Be realistic about your ability: if in doubt, sit it out!
