activities

ECC runs trips all year round – check the Activities calendar below, Facebook and your inbox for details of what’s going on. Recent highlights include many sea and river trips catering to a range of abilities, including overnight trips to the Isles of Scilly, Dartmoor, our autumn Salty Weekend for sea kayak and surf and our annual Lake District White Water weekend in February.

An email will go out to all members about any club trips being offered. If people sign up to the trip – either by emailing the club or contacting the coach – they will usually get added to a WhatsApp group for that trip, with a summary of the trip details. There is also a Peer Paddle group where any club member can suggest paddle ideas to other club members (Please note they are peer paddles, which means everyone is fully responsible for their own safety & kit).

Last Sunday of the month: Club paddle

Every last Sunday of the month, there is a club paddle, which is a coached by William Brett, usually open for any level of paddler, including beginners, for which you can arrange to borrow club kit and boats as part of your membership.

Depending on the season, the paddles are either white water (October – March) or touring trips on estuaries and rivers (April – September)

Coached sea kayak and sheltered water trip

On Saturdays in the middle of the month a coached sea trip or sheltered water trip will be run throughout the winter and spring months by John Harcombe, one of the club’s coaches. Trips are generally aimed at sea kayakers, but other touring craft might be acceptable, dependent on the trip and weather.

The location of the trips will be dependent on the weather (and those who have signed up to attend) and will include moderate water sea kayaking on the West Somerset, North Devon or East Devon coasts – or easier sheltered water trips on the Exe, Dart, Teign and Torridge Estuaries .

The first trip will be on Saturday 21st December 2024, then: 11th January 2025 and 15th February 2025.
Subsequent dates will be confirmed via the WhatsApp group.

Salty weekend

At the end of September/beginning of October, our yearly Salty Weekend takes place. Usually somewhere in Cornwall or Devon, for a weekend of sea paddling along a magnificent stretch of coastline, which offers excellent opportunities for rock hopping, journeys and surf.

As a club trip, there will be opportunities for all levels of sea paddler, including those new to sea kayaking.

Lake District White Water

Every February ECC goes on a Winter Trip to the Lake District!
For those interested in white water paddling, any adults with basic river skills are welcome. There are a wide range of rivers to choose from, with grades to suit all abilities.
There will also be a contingent of ‘non-river-paddling’ club members who are likely to be planning some flat water trips – though this is likely to be on a peer paddle basis, which means that coaches will not be leading these trips.
We are staying in a youth hostel. Club kit can be arranged.

This year the dates are 31st Jan – 2nd Feb 2025.

Please drop us an email if you’re interested in coming along and would like to be added to the WhatsApp group.

Peer Paddles

…are usually posted by individual members in the Peer Paddles WhatsApp group or on Facebook. THESE ARE NOT CLUB TRIPS and it should be noted that any paddles are not organised by – nor have they been Risk Assessed – by Exmoor Canoe Club and as such, are not covered by our insurance. On a Peer Paddle there is no coach or designated leader (assumed or otherwise). Everyone takes full responsibility for their own safety (& kit), whilst behaving in a responsible way. Paddlers in the group have a duty of care to look out for themselves and each other whilst staying within their own limitations. You need to:
* Be confident in the water/conditions you are paddling in.
* Be comfortable with the abilities of others in the peer group.
* Do your own risk assessment based on water levels, weather conditions etc.
* Be realistic about your ability: if in doubt, sit it out!

Kit Hire

Club equipment (including kayaks, canoes, kayaks, SUPs and associated kit – paddles, spray deck, buoyancy aid etc), is available for members to use on organised club trips and to hire for personal use.

We’re a social bunch, so there will usually be a pub visit or a bevvy at the end of any trip or session, and if you haven’t already done so, please come along and introduce yourself on a club night.

We look forward to seeing you on the water!
